  uhk, I think the sound you're describing at 0:44 of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0wwV5HUvq8 is actually a vibraphone with the tremolo effect switched on, and playing in unison with a piano. So that's something that the Basie band might have used. I think you're right, though, that modern-sounding electric guitar would have been strange. The Basie Band is known for Freddie Greene's very straightforward, traditional guitar sound.
  
  I think the sound at 0:53 of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdboboINAeo is actually just a plain jazz guitar, played in unison with a piano. I don't hear any kind of electronic modification there. That's the magic of orchestration!
  
  Your Wolfgang Kowatsch samples are interesting, in that they use an old-fashioned sound for the horns, but also have synthesizer, and both use an electric bass guitar rather than an acoustic (upright bass).

  They also sound "soft" to me, and somewhat comparable to my unknown tune. Both tunes have been recorded also around 1981 (1980 to be precisely) by the big band of the local radio station (and have never been published).
  And the "guitar trick-effect" at about 0:44 of my unknown record reminds me on George Shearing. Has Sammy Nestico or Count Basie ever inserted such a "guitar trick-effect"?
  
  On the other hand, some "guitar trick-effect" has also been used by Ernst Kugler/ORF Big Band:
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdboboINAeo (starting at about 0:53). This tune was also an unknown record until recently (and also recorded ota from the local radio station 40+ years ago).

  uhk, I've spent some time listening to Sammy Nestico recordings, and haven't yet found your tune. But I'm feeling more certain that your tune *is* a Nestico tune. You might broaden your search to include the Count Basie Orchestra, which is the group Nestico is best known for. I can't speak to your associations with SWR Big Band, but will just say that Nestico arrangements that came out of the Basie group are well known, and played by many, many groups, especially high school and college jazz bands. It might take some time to listen to every mid-tempo Nestico tune, though! Some American jazz teachers/professors might recognize your tune right off the bat, and I'll ask the few that I know. In the meantime, I'll just listen to more beautiful Basie recordings, and maybe I'll come across your tune sooner or later.

  uhk, you're definitely beyond my expertise here, but as soon as I have time I'll sit down with your links and try to help out. My source for pointing to Sammy Nestico is just that I'm a jazz bassist, have played a number of big band arrangement by Nestico, and think that it sounds like his rather distinctive style. Anyway, as I said, I'll follow up as soon as I can!

  I have tried to find some samples of Sammy Nestico's work. Found this: https://www.allmusic.com/album/night-flight-mw0000651230 and this: https://www.discogs.com/de/Sammy-Nestico-Dark-Orchid/master/329086 (1981!). And this YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQneTWzq3eA reminds me most on my unknon track so far. Do you have any records from Sammy Nestico in mind which is even closer to my unknown record? So far, I was suspecting that my unknown tune was recorded by Ernst Kugler or some other ORF big band leader.

  I must confess that I didn't know Sammy Nestico. Please forgive me my ignorance. I am more familar with Paul Kuhn, Hugo Strasser, Max Greger, Horst Jankowski, Frank Pleyer, Peter Herbolzheimer and other Germans. So, I googled about Sammy Nestico. Found that he was dealing with the SWR Big Band at times. Do you happen to know when that was? The relationship to the SWR Big Band actually makes him a good candidate of being the arranger of my unknown tune. Reaosn: I have recorded this this tune from a local radio station (Saarländischer Rundfunk - SR). This radio station was obviously playing records from the SR Tanzorchester (Manfred Minnich, Eberhard Pokorny, Wolfgang Kowatsch, Hans Hammerschmid), but also rceords from the HR Tanzorchester (HR Big Band - Heinz Schönberger) and: from the SWR/SWF Big Band. Judging from other records on the same music cassette, my radio recording must stem from around 1981 - not very much later.
